Drupal

Is Drupal right for me?

If you find yourself asking the above question, I hope to help you find the answer. In this post I'm going to look at what Drupal does well, and what some of it's competitors do better. I will not focus so much on what Drupal does that it's competitors don't do, because if I did, my post would be obsolete within a month. Everyone is emulating Drupal.

Drupal is beastly. I mean that in a literal sense. If you threw Drupal in a pit with all the other content management systems out there, I'm pretty sure Drupal would come out on top. Drupal is a very powerful system, but as Spiderman taught me, with great power, comes great responsibility. What I mean is, if you can't or are unwilling to put the time in to learn the ins and outs of Drupal, you probably won't be very impressed with what is otherwise an excellent piece of software.

So why would you choose it? Read on to find out...

Comment RSS feeds for everyone!

I went and installed the Comment RSS module so you can all enjoy subscriptions to active comment feeds. I'm sure those following my religious debates will appreciate it.

If you don't know what RSS is, don't worry about it. You probably won't think you're missing much.

New site theme

Still working on a new theme for the site, as can be seen. There's still a lot of stuff that doesn't look right, I'm working on it. I'll be adding more graphics as soon as I'm feeling more creative.

Update: The new theme's feeling pretty complete now. There's a couple areas that still need some work, but for the most part it's done. Still trying to figure out how I can package it separately from it's Zen base-theme, but I need a name before I do that. Right now it's named Nails, because it was inspired by the layout on NIN.com.

ShareThis

Finally, someone has made a decent, working social bookmarking module for Drupal 6.x! Many thanks out to Jake Stawn for his hard work on the ShareThis module. Everything is working great so far.

The ShareThis module will allow you to share content from my site on a number of other "social media" sites including Digg, Reddit, Facebook, and Myspace... and I definitely encourage my readers to do so :)

Here's the download link for anyone looking to add this to their own Drupal 6 site: http://drupal.org/project/sharethis

Update: I suggested a feature to the module author earlier today to make an option to hide the ShareThis link on the article teasers (summaries in the main page for example) and he's already updated it. I must say, you're very responsive Jake.

Reflections on a few days with Drupal

I've been experimenting with Drupal on this site and one other for a few days now and overall, let me say I'm very impressed. With that said, there are a few things I think could be better and that's mostly to do with the URL alias system and specifically how it relates to search engine optimization.

First post on the new blog!

So, I've setup Drupal 6.0 on here, which I think is pretty slick. I'm very impressed with Drupal so far. Anyway, I promise better posts soon, for now this is all I've got.
